Description

Cast skeleton mount of Deltadromeus agilis, a theropod dinosaur native to North Africa during the mid to late Cretaceous era.  This particular skeleton, part of the Spinosaurus: Lost Giant of the Cretaceous travelling exhibit currently on display at the National Geographic building in Washington, DC, is based on a holotype that was 26ft (8m) long and believed to weight 1.5 tons.  According to the information display at the exhibit, it's believed that the holotype (and thus this skeleton) represents an animal that has not yet attained its full size; the display gives the animal's full size as 42ft (13m) long and up to 3.5 tons (3.2 metric tons).  Deltadromeus is currently classified as a ceratosaur, but as a complete skull of the animal has yet to be discovered, it's placement in any group is subject to change.  Some palentologists believe that Deltadromeus is simply a young version of a larger dinosaur called Bahariasaurus, which was a contempory but is only known from a few fossil fragments.  Other contemporaries of Deltadromeus include Rugops, Carcharodontosaurus, and Spinosaurus.
