Madison's Temple

Mr. Madison's Temple at Montpelier. The Temple was used as a gazebo by the residents. The concrete seen at the base was added during the restoration efforts at Montpelier; the original base would have been wooden. Under the base would have been a 23 foot deep ice house. The ice would have come from a small pond located down the hill from Montpelier, which would have been completely frozen during the winter months. The ice would have been used throughout the year to cool the drinks of the Madisons and their guests. The Temple is still used today as a wedding site for those who can afford the fee.
