Rugops Head and Skull

The skull (right) and reconstructed head of Rugops primus, an African relative of the more famous Carnotaurus.  At an estimated length of between 23-30ft (7-9m), Rugops was a fairly large predator, but not as large as its contemporaries Carcharodontosaurus and Spinosaurus.  Because it was smaller than its neighbors, it is sometimes depicted as a scavanger in popular media (like the recent BBC documentary Planet Dinosaur), though it probably hunted smaller prey as well as scavenged.  This particular display is part of a travelling exhibition called "Spinosaurus: Lost Giant of the Cretaceous" currently on display at the National Geographic Explorer's Hall in Washington, DC until April 12, 2015.
